You may have heard the term Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) before. You might even know that it’s important to have them in our bodies. But what exactly are they, and why are they important? Let’s dive in together.
Essential fatty acids or EFAs are just what they sound like – acids made of necessary fats. EFAs are important because although they are required for good health, the body does not naturally produce them. They have to be ingested from food or supplements. Sometimes they are referred to as Vitamin F, but they’re actually fats, not vitamins. Omega-3 fatty acids are often mentioned when discussing proper nutrition, but there are others, too!
Eating a diet rich in EFAs is important, but you may need a supplement to help. You can find sources of EFAs in foods like fish, flaxseed, oils (olive, canola), seeds (like chia, pumpkin, and sunflower), walnuts, and leafy vegetables. Vegetarians should strongly consider supplementing since their diet is naturally low in fat.
EFAs are vital to so many parts of the body. Here is just a short list:

Severe EFAs deficiencies are relatively uncommon, but they show up most obviously in the skin. It can cause eczema, with itchiness, red skin, and rashes. But many people can benefit from an increase in EFAs, especially if their diet is not ideal.
EFAs are recommended for people who suffer from:
