Skincare in your 30s and 40s

Are you still using the same skincare routine that you did in your teens?Maybe you’ve noticed that your go-to products just aren’t working for you any more. Or perhaps you’ve realized that bad skincare habits are starting to wreak more havoc on your face than they used to do. Never fear! Melissa Allen is here!

In Your 30s

There is no one size fits all for skincare routines, but everyone should follow the following mantra twice a day: Cleanse, Tone, Treat, Moisturize, Protect.

Find a cleanser that works well for your skin type, such as a cream-based cleanser for dry or sensitive skin or a gel-based cleanser for oily or acne-prone skin.

Toner is one of the most underrated tools in the anti-aging arsenal. Everyone over the age of 25 should invest in a quality hydrating mist toner (something with hyaluronic acid).

Treatment products will vary depending on what kind of skincare concerns are unique to you. This is the time to use products that reduce pore appearance, decrease hyperpigmentation, and treat acne. This is the also the stage to start being proactive about using anti-aging products, such as those that encourage collagen regeneration, improved hydration, and specially designed eye creams and serums.

Everyone needs a good moisturizer, even those with oily or acne-prone skin. Creams with peptides, antioxidants and hyaluronic acid are best for dehydrated skin, and oil-free lotions and light gel moisturizers are best for oily skin.

Sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or above should be used every day to decrease hyperpigmentation and wrinkles caused by UVA rays.

Monthly facials are a great complement to a daily skincare routine. For people in their 30s, the natural cell turnover is starting to decrease. Monthly facials allow for a deeper cleansing and treatment, leaving skin looking bright, clear, and healthy.

In Your 40s

The Cleanse, Tone, Treat, Moisturize, Protect Mantra is still important twice a day. However, you may need different products to target new issues, such as using more anti-aging treatments. This is the perfect time to talk to your esthetician to make sure your skincare products are the right ones for you.

It is also beneficial to receive more treatment in-office. For example, in addition to the monthly treatments you should already be receiving, add in a three to six week series of treatments per week a few times a year. For example, someone who was concerned about wrinkles or sagging skin could do a series of 6  microcurrent treatments once a week to reap maximum benefits, then go back to monthly facials for maintenance.

It’s also important to continue to check for any signs of damage to the skin. Check once a month for any suspicious moles or marks and make an appointment with a dermatologist right away if there are any concerns.

Follow these tips and you can have beautiful skin at every age!
