Walk into any almost any kind of store in America and there will be some kind of skincare product on display. Skincare can be bought at drugstores, at salons, grocery stores, department stores, and online. Now they can even be bought from friends selling from their homes through direct sales. There might be millions of products out there promising a million things for your skin. What’s the difference in these products? How do you find one that’s right for you?
One of the biggest differences between skin products is whether they are over the counter (OTC)/cosmetic grade products or clinical/professional grade. Most products fall into the OTC category. These are the products you find in most stores (CVS, Macy’s, Sephora, etc.) and sold in multi-level marketing or direct sales. These products have a wide range of prices and ingredients. Often, they do contain researched active ingredients. However, since these products are available to the general public, the active ingredients must be weak or in such small amounts that they may not be effective. These products are not monitored by the FDA, but they are required to be safe if used appropriately.
Clinical or professional grade products are sold only by licensed professionals such as dermatologists or estheticians. These products have scientific research to support their effectiveness and must be made with 99% pure active ingredients. They may be more expensive due to the fact that they are created in small batches with fresh and high-quality ingredients, but this also makes them much more effective when used.
OTC products can work for individuals, but trying to find the right products can be a long and expensive process of trial and error with many different products. Going to a licensed dermatologist or esthetician greatly reduces the time it takes to find a quality skincare product, and he or she can work with you to find the perfect product for your unique skin needs. The end result is better skin with less time and money spent overall.
