4 Bad Habits to Kick in 2022 for Your Skin Health
It’s not too late to set new year resolutions for your skin! We all want beautiful, youthful, glowing skin no matter what age we are. But many of us sabotage our efforts with bad habits. Our expert estheticians at SPA Melissa Allen put together a helpful guide of skin guidelines to keep you looking healthy and beautiful.
1. Don’t smoke!
By this point, everyone knows that smoking is bad for you and causes many health problems, from stained teeth and bad breath to lung cancer. But you might underestimate the impact smoking has on your face.
Who wants to look older? Not you! But smoking causes dehydration in the skin and leads to accelerated signs of aging like deeper lines, wrinkles, and sagging. Smoking can even cause damaged skin to heal itself slower. This means damage from other factors like the sun has even more impact.
2. Eat less sugar.
How can something so sweet be so damaging? But sugar can cause all kinds of problems in our bodies. Sugar causes a spike in insulin levels. Over time, higher insulin levels can create insulin resistance, which means your body doesn’t use insulin effectively. Insulin resistance is linked with increased production of the hormone androgen, which can lead to breakouts and acne.
But that’s not all! Sugar causes inflammation in the body. Inflammation is never a good thing, but when sugar attaches to a protein or a lipid, it causes Advanced Glycation End Products or AGEs. AGEs affect nearly every cell in the body, and as you might guess from the acronym, are a factor in aging. (They also make degenerative diseases worse.)
3. Get Plenty of Sleep
You know you’ve had a rough night’s sleep when you look into the mirror in the morning. Bags under the eyes, sallow skin … we look older, and our skin doesn’t look fresh. There’s a genuine reason for this.
We make new collagen while we’re sleeping. Collagen is that secret ingredient to pumper, younger-looking skin. If you’re not getting your beauty sleep of at least seven hours, it really is impacting your face.
Blood flow also gets pumped up when you’re snoozing. If you want a healthy, rosy glow, you need to get more sleep. Blood flow also helps decrease dark circles under the eyes, making you look well-rested.
It can be a challenge to get the sleep you need, but even getting just 30 more minutes can make a real difference. Get into a routine, and create good sleep habits, and you’ll enjoy the results every morning!
4. Stay hydrated.
It’s winter, and many of us already deal with dry air and skin that needs more moisture. But hydration from the inside out is as important as using our moisturizing products on your skin, too. A lack of water can make lines and wrinkles more visible and decrease your skin’s elasticity.
When our body is dehydrated, sebum, our skin’s natural oil becomes thicker. It’s a protective measure, but it can make skin problems worse. Acne, breakouts, inflammation … nobody wants to make those skin problems harder!
Hydrating our body keeps all of our body’s systems working optimally since the body is mainly water. The right amount of water in our bodies impacts blood flow and makes us feel better.
If drinking more water sounds tough, start by just adding one cup of water when you wake up in the morning. It’s a great way to start the day. Or add high-water foods to your diet, such as cucumbers, celery, watermelon, zucchini, or strawberries.
